Gun Violence: A Tragic Reality in American Culture

Everyday across America, people get up and go to work. Some people drop their kids off at school on the way to work or stop and grab a coffee to take to drink at their desk. It’s just an ordinary day. But in 2016, for 96 Americans it wasn’t just an ordinary day. Why? Because they were killed by gun violence. On an average day, 96 Americans are killed with gunsaccording to Everytown Researchin 2016.1That’s 96 Americans too many that lost their lives by gun violence.Injuries by gun violence also take their toll on innocent victims. In the US from 2001 to 2013, approximately 921,613 people suffered nonfatal injuries from firearms according to research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. 2These injuries could affect a person’s health for the rest of their lives.
Are You at Risk?
According to a recent research study by Pew Research Center, about 4-in-10 American adults (42%) say they live in a household with a gun3making anyone a potential victim of gun violence. In the first month of this year,an alarming 1,326 deaths and 2,382 injuries from gun violence have already occurred in the United States in 2018 according to statistics by Gun Violence Archive.4 Nobody is safe from being a target of gun violence, but some people could be considered more prominent targets because of their celebrity status – actors, politicians, musicians, athletes, and executives with high ranking positions in companies or organizations.
Top Level Executives Need Protection
In today’s volatile society, executive protection isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.High level executives like CEOs are considered a valuable asset to the companies they manage. And valuable assets need protection. Executives are privy to private company information and strategies, product development, and trade secrets. Their high profiles can make them an attractive target to disgruntled employees with a grudge, terminated employees who view their dismissal as the fault of upper management, or upset employees embroiled in a labour dispute. Security companies like National Security Service (NSS) offer executive protection services to high level management and their families to keep them safe from violence.
Schools and Places of Worship Can Be Targets
No one can forget the carnage caused by a mass shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012 or the 26 people who lost their lives to a deranged gunman in the fall of 2017 at a small rural church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Children deserve to have an education free from violence. And places of worship have traditionally been respected as peaceful places of refuge.Professional unarmed security guards are working to help keep people safe from gun violence in churches and schools.
The lives of countless Americans have been drastically changed by gun violence. Staying safe in society today poses a significant challenge. Security guards from top notch security guard companies like NSS are doing their best to keep the people in their care safe.

National Security Service Provides Guard Services for Megan’s House Event

Lowell, Mass.—As part of its far-reaching commitment to corporate philanthropy, National Security Service (NSS) provided important support last month for the Megan’s House Foundation’s 2nd Annual Golf Tournament.

The nationwide security firm is a frequent supporter of selected nonprofits around the country through the donation of its specialized Event Security services. Event Security is one aspect of of NSS’s extensive portfolio of professional guard services for the full range of security needs.

The Megan’s House event drew some 150 golfers for the tournament and hundreds more supporters for a day of food, fun, and games for people of all ages. In all, the event raised more than $30,000 for Megan’s House, a comprehensive residential substance abuse treatment home for young women between the ages of 18 and 26 who struggle with addiction, including those caught up in the widely-recognized epidemic of opioid addiction.

Opioids are a class of drugs that includes not only illegal narcotics such as heroin but also many prescription painkillers, including fentanyl, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. Experts say that more than 21 million Americans struggle with substance abuse, a figure that includes about two million people abusing prescription drugs and nearly 600,000 heroin users.

Following the golf contest, the group hosted a luncheon headlined by the tournament’s Honorary Chairman, State Representative Tom Golden, a longtime leader in Massachusetts in responding to the crisis of opioid addiction. Golden also played the role of auctioneer and good-humored arm-twister for the day’s culminating feature, an auction of donated goods and services and raffle items.

In securing the event—as with all of the charity events it works—NSS takes the business of keeping guests and property safe and secure off the shoulders of the organizers, giving them one less thing to worry about, a National Security Service spokesman explained.

“There’s one thing nobody needs in the midst of planning, promoting, and staging an event–large or small: One more thing to worry about,” he said. “NSS Event Security Guards have the training, expertise, and experience to ensure a secure event, without becoming intrusive.”

With 437 field offices covering all 50 states, NSS has deep experience in providing security guard services for events of all types and sizes, from corporate meetings to parties and promotional events, fundraisers of all sorts, and large performance and sporting events, the spokesman added.

Whether it is a corporate meeting, a party, an entertainment venue, a promotional event, or anything else you have in the works, event security always requires a rare breed of event security guards who can bring the blend of experience, judgement, sensitivity, efficiency, and professionalism that you expect and your guests deserve.

For their part, a representative of the Megan’s House Foundation said that NSS support was an important contribution to the success of the golf tournament and the day’s other events. “Such generosity,” he said, “will go a long way toward ensuring the residents of Megan’s House continue to receive the treatment and services necessary to help them overcome addiction and grow to lead independent lives.”

What to Look For When Hiring a Corporate Security Services Provider

It is a given fact that every business owner who wishes to safeguard his/her business from any threat or harm should hire a corporate security services provider. However, hundreds of corporate security services providers abound and it is simply hard to determine which one is trustworthy and will work to your best interest.

To help you find a suitable corporate security services provider, here are a few things you should make sure that your prospective provider has before taking on their services:

Accreditation and Experience

A dependable corporate security guard services provider should have all necessary permits and accreditations to conduct business in such an industry. Remember: the lives of your employees and the welfare of your business properties are at stake. Entrust these important matters only to personnel who come from providers that are mindful enough to undergo and follow strict regulations in their field.

One thing more: remember that the security personnel you will hire should have the experience and proper background to be deemed effective in security work. Hiring inexperienced security personnel may prove catastrophic to your business if an incident takes place due to your security personnel's lapse in judgment.

High-end Equipment

Corporate security services providers should know that security personnel, no matter how experienced they may be, will find it difficult to fulfill their duty if they are not equipped with the right equipment. Advanced equipments like ID scanners, GPS tracking, and FLIR devices, among others, should be provided in-house by your chosen provider. Access to incident and accident reporting software and web-based scheduling solutions is also ideal for an efficient means of communication to authorities and the management should the need arises.

A Dedication to Excellence in Service

An old saying states that anyone can succeed in an endeavor if they have their heart in it. In short, your corporate security services provider should be dedicated not only with keeping watch of your premises 24/7, but also in being a provider that offers nothing but excellent services. Committed personnel are likely to stay hands-on in their jobs and would make their rounds and monitoring efforts more effective and to your business' advantage.

The rate offered by a corporate security services provider should not be the only thing to look at when hiring people who will be entrusted with security-related responsibilities. Remember to look for the three characteristics mentioned above in order to hire the right provider. Do not endanger your business, premises, and your employees by making a wrong choice for less.

Security Guards Facts

Security guards make up an increasingly large portion of the security and guarding detail that is done on a daily basis today, yet most people do not understand the job or its duties. The facts about the job and its duties may surprise you.

Security Guard Name History

During the middle ages in Europe, watchmen were employed to look after valuables as well as to observe and report on any incoming attacks. Later on in America they became known more predominately as night-watchmen before their title evolved to a more general and inclusive title such as security guard, private patrol officer, or security officer.

Can Security Guards Make Arrests?

Yes, and No. Guards do not have the power, or are required to make a criminal arrest. They can however make citizen's arrests or act as an agent of law enforcement officers in restraining individuals when told to do so by a law officer.

Can a Guard Carry and Use a Gun?

Security officers can be deemed as either and unarmed guard or a armed guard. An armed security guard that has passed and completed the unarmed guard training can then go and complete the training to become an armed security guard. Armed guards are then permitted to carry and use a gun if necessary, although it will still be a last resort and only used in defense. A gun though must usually be worn in a visible manner unless you have obtained a concealed weapons permit.

Can You Become a Security Guard if You've been Arrested?

The regulation and licensing of guards is handled differently from state to state. Most states will not permit anyone who has been convicted of a felony to become a security guard. Many states will not allow misdemeanor convictions as well. Depending on the arrest you may be still able to qualify as a guard but you should check the specific laws in your state.

Do You Need an Education?

Just like the regulations in each state concerning arrests and guard training, education is dependent on where you will be applying to become a guard. Most states though do not have strict education requirements and do not require a college education. Usually a potential applicant will have to complete a certain amount of required guard training through a state approved training facility before they can begin work as an official guard.

Do Guards Need to Be Strong and in Shape?

While most guard jobs do not have any fitness requirements, a guard should not be completely out of shape. They also do not need to be overly strong or in shape. Most of a guard's job involves observing, reporting, and communicating. Very few times are physical strength actually needed for a situation.
Is being a Guard a Good Career?

Yes! Security Officer jobs are growing at a rapid rate with no sight of slowing done. The benefits of having a guard on duty and the heightened sense of security that most places are in today are creating a growing need for more guards everyday.
